For the Assembly

Method
 

Preparing the Batter
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well blended.
  3. In another bowl, mix together sugar, eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  5. Carefully stir in hot water to create a smooth and pourable batter.
Baking the Cake
  1. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans.
  2. Bake for 30-35 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  3. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Assembling the Layers
  1. Once cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
  2. Arrange sliced strawberries evenly over the frosting.
  3. Place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake as desired.
  4. Decorate with additional strawberries as desired.

Notes

Store the cake properly to maintain freshness. Can freeze un-frosted cakes for longer storage.
