Method
Preparing the Batter
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well blended.
- In another bowl, mix together sugar, eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
- Carefully stir in hot water to create a smooth and pourable batter.
Baking the Cake
- Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Assembling the Layers
- Once cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
- Arrange sliced strawberries evenly over the frosting.
- Place the second layer on top, and frost the top and sides of the cake as desired.
- Decorate with additional strawberries as desired.
Notes
Store the cake properly to maintain freshness. Can freeze un-frosted cakes for longer storage.
