  • 4 tablespoons butter For richness.
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Use gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option.
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder Adds flavor depth.
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper For seasoning.
Toppings (optional)
  • 1/2 cup buttered breadcrumbs For added crunch when baked.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook the macaroni in salted water until slightly under al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  4. Slowly add in the milk, whisking constantly until the mixture is smooth and thickened.
  5. Stir in the mustard powder, black pepper, and grated cheese until melted and smooth.
Baking
  1. Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce and pour into a greased casserole dish.
  2. If using, sprinkle buttered breadcrumbs on top.
  3. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until hot and bubbly on top.

Feel free to customize with different cheeses, add-ins like cooked ham or vegetables, and adjust seasoning to taste. For storage, refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days.
